The MAK Resort & Spa is established on an area with a rich and distinguished history. Punta
Rassa (named “flat or razed point” by Spanish explorers in the early 1500's) juts out where the Caloosahatchee
River meets the Gulf of Mexico. It has survived hurricanes, wars and fires to become a traveler’s paradise. A telegraph
station was built in the Fort Dulany barracks from the Civil War, and cattlemen began to raise their herds on the Point. Soon
the telegraph operator and his wife established a rooming house for the cattlemen, which would later evolve into a small inn
upon the quiet shores.
After being destroyed in a 1906 fire, the Inn was rebuilt. Today’s MAK Resort was inspired by its turn-of-the-century
design, featuring a rounded Victorian pavilion with a cupola, and two wings of rooms that overlooked the water. Current guests
still enjoy the Victorian ambience, and views from waterfront rooms and the signature octagonal pavilion—but now the
hotel boasts the most luxurious comforts. The waters off Punta Rassa continue to be known as the world's best site for tarpon
fishing. And discerning travelers, the rich and famous among them, still call this idyllic spot their preferred retreat, year
after year.
